A few weeks ago, I stood in front of a room full of people, delivering a talk on self-trust and leadership. I’d already presented it at the Regional Women’s Network luncheon, so this was meant to be the easy round!
But then… I lost my place.
My mind went blank. My cards, which I’d stopped referring to, suddenly made no sense. I stood there… in silence… for what felt like forever.
And something surprising happened.
Nothing fell apart.
I didn’t spontaneously combust. I didn’t fill the space with nervous chatter. I didn’t run out of the room or laugh it off.
Instead, I paused… and waited for the fog to clear. Eventually, it did.
And the talk continued.
This is what self-leadership looks like
That moment taught me something I couldn’t have learned from any book or course:
Self-trust doesn’t lie in always knowing what to do. It’s in being willing to stay with the discomfort, acknowledge it with self compassion and forge on anyway.
For many leaders, the pressure to perform, hold it together and never miss a beat creates a culture of perfectionism and fear. But what if the real strength lies in showing your team how to recover and not just how to avoid mistakes?
When people see that kind of presence, it sends a clear message:
“It’s safe to be human here. You don’t have to hide when things get hard.”
That’s the kind of culture that attracts top talent - and keeps them.
Your team doesn’t need perfect leadership, they need present leadership
Workplaces that retain great people tend to have one thing in common:
Leaders who are calm, consistent and real.
They regulate before they react.
They take responsibility without self-punishment.
They model how to pause, reset and carry on.
Not being soft, but being steady.
The bottom line
If you're trying to build a team that performs under pressure, consider how you show up in the pressure moments yourself. What if you could bring more presence rather than polish?
That moment on stage could’ve rattled me. Instead, it reminded me:
You can go blank and still be a strong leader.
You can lose your place and still be someone people trust to follow.
And that’s what people stay for.
